It's CGI. I saw this trick on "Mythbusters" last year, Steve has ILM come in and overlay his video with a fake ring. Then, they tilt the camera angle so that it LOOKS like he's holding something. In reality, he's just waving his arms in the air.
The idea of a silat person who knows close magic is horrifying to me. It really hasn't been investigated much, that I know of, for self defense. Except of course by the ninjitsu people and they aren't telling. And the rest of their training methodology is... well.
