Cameron's own comment is that the plot is Dances with Wolves in Space ...
He's a helluva movie maker. His SF ideas aren't particularly original -- the Terminator he swiped from Harlan Ellison, and there have been avatar-stories around forever, though that term only came into vogue with computer game players relatively recently.
Put a human mind into an alien body? Or control a local from orbit? Been done in the literature for years. By the time it shows up onscreen, it's usually a cliche.
