Want to See a Real Man's Gun?

The 4-b0re elephant rifle. The round is scary all by itself, but take a look at it compared to the .475-500 Nitro Express.

Man. Talk about field artillery. Kind of hard to even imagine the recoil ...

And Holland & Holland made a .600 Nitro Express, too. Not much velocity on the round (around 800fps as I recall), but with something that big it more than makes up in mass what it lacks in velocity. Just the ticket for rhinos in the garden, eh?

I believe the 4-bore was like the original H&H .600 Nitro, in that they both used black powder.

Those beautiful damascus barrels that, when smokeless powder became the norm, would blow up and kill you deader than whatever you were aiming at if you tried using the new cartridges in'em.

The modern versions of the 4-bore are somewhat stouter steel ...

the 600nitro throws a 900gr bullet at 1900fps. it doesnt use black, thus the "nitro" designation. the 4bore throws a 1750-1950 grain ball or bullet at 1350-1450fps with 400-600gr of Fg black powder
