Knife Laws

Recently, the guys at Customs decided they wanted to make about 80% of the folding knives in the U.S. illegal, and they got a stooge in the Senate to cobble together a bill to do just that.

Fortunately, some of the Senators in office aren't entirely stupid, and an amendment was added to narrow that down to switchblades, which are already illegal in most states, leaving the thumb-studs and wrist-snappers alone. Two R's and a D sponsored the adjustment.

Oh, and check out the mini-karambit:

I can't find a link to a sales site offhand, it's obviously a foreign maker, but I'm betting if one pops up, there will be a market for this nasty little claw ...

  1. I want one. I don't really have a use for it. I just want one.

  3. Thanks for the link Brad.

Nothing really practical about it -- opening it is a slomo proposition and at that price, I wouldn't expect that, um, sturdy would ever be in the same sentence; still ...

I have a Cutter Knife and Tool folding kerambit that is almost a fixed-blade when it's locked open, it's so well-built, plus I can open it on the draw, but even though the blade is well under three inches, it would be a nasty thing to have to explain using, if you had to use it to defend yourself.

Of course, anything short of the Girl Scout pocket knife is going to be looked at by a prosecutor as Rambo's rhino-stopper.

I still think the closing argument with the GSA knife would be fun to hear: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the defendant used a knife against three unarmed men!

Whereupon you get your lawyer to hold up the picture of the three bikers in full gear, then the mint-green Girl Scout pocket knife ...

  4. Where the laws allow it, I usually carry a custom made thumb opener with a 3" pattern welded blade and mastodon ivory scales... maybe I should get the scales replaced with something in a pink "Hello Kitty" motif?

Does it say something about me that my verification word is aconan?

  5. I actually have one of these. It's not particularly slow in opening, and it's pretty sturdy and decently made. The main problem is the blade steel. I believe it's 440A SS which is so soft it won't hold an edge for any decent period of time. But I still really enjoy it. Ultimately, I would say at the price, it is worth it. Though the design was by Jose Negron of Mtech knives, the prototype from which this was made came from Reese Weiland.
