Pretty neat, hey? The top one looks darker because of the light b.g., the bottom one lighter because of the darker b.g. but just looking at it this way? I'd swear on a stack of Bibles the bottom figure was lighter than the top.
What you see isn't aways what you think you see, much less what you get ...
It's not just the background, it's the highlighted edge on the bottom and the shadowed edge on the top. This is shown by making a ring with your finger and thumb and omitting the bg all together while just looking and the middle edges. It's giving the image contrast which enhances the illusion.
